Description:

A Tongan war club, dating to the 19th century. This wooden club from Tonga known as a “Povai” is unusual for two reasons – first because of the the short size, and secondly because the tavatava decoration is not complete. The club does not appear to be cut down, so the short length could be because this was intended as a child's club? One that would be high-ranking within Tongan society. The surface of the club is decorated in intricate carved panels of “tavatava” geometric designs, except the top quarter is unfinished and has incised guidelines and just two partial lines of tavatava. It will remain a mystery as why – perhaps the carver died near the end of the club's completion? One can only speculate but it makes this club quite interesting. The piece has an excellent dark colour and patina.
