The Weeping Angel, Louis Auguste Moreau
The Weeping Angel, Louis Auguste Moreau
Description:
An excellent gilt bronze statue of “The Weeping Angel” by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919), dating to the second half of the 19th century. This fine sculpture is after Nicolas Blasset's (1600-1659) marble statue in Notre-Dame Cathedral, made circa 1636. This is an iconic piece of Notre-Dame's statuary and is one of the funerary symbols adorning the mausoleum of Canon Guilain Lucas de Genville.
This bronze depicts a seated winged cherub, his left hand placed upon an hourglass and his right arm resting upon a skull. The quality of casting is wonderful with intricate detail throughout. The cherub is gilt bronze and the skull and hourglass are patinated bronze. The piece is fixed to a white marble base with a brass plaque that reads “ENFANT PLEUREUR, de la CATHEDRALE d'AMIENS, reproduit Par A. MOREAU”. The piece is signed on the reverse of the skull.
