The Pieta
The Pieta
Description:
An excellent Spanish carved wood & polychrome statue of The Pieta, dating to the late 17th century. This fine carving is in the manner of Luisa Roldán (called La Roldana)(1652-1706), the earliest woman sculptor documented in Spain, who's work is in many important institutions and Museums. The carving offered here has excellent polychrome decoration depicting the many bloody wounds Christ endured, and the Virgin Mary has inset glass eyes. The piece is expertly carved with intricate detail and well observed anatomy. The Pieta is presented upon a faux marble base and appears to be carved as one whole piece with the statue.
