A unique pair of paintings; a clothed portrait and a nude, presented in a single frame made to conceal and hide the nude painting from sensitive eyes, that can be revealed by sliding the clothed portrait out of the side of the frame. The top painting depicting a young woman with billowing dress carrying a basket with chickens on her head amidst a landscape. This painting can be slid out of the period gilt frame through an opening carved in the side, revealing the nude painting beneath. The nude depicts a lady set within a landscape and standing next to a river. Both paintings have fine attention to detail and the nude is particularly fine with sensitive handling of the paint, making for an atmospheric and captivating painting. Both paintings are oil on panel, unsigned, and date to the mid-19th century.

Condition:
Top painting has some surface dirt and craqueleur throughout. There is a partial split to the top right edge with some touched-in loss, but this is beneath the frame and only revealed when removed from the frame. The second painting is in good condition. The frame has been overpainted gold at some point. Age related wear as expected but overall in good ready to hang condition. Please examine photos carefully.
