This sampler is signed “Mary Bethell in her 11th year, 1816” and is decorated with a poem on the subject of death, floral motifs, baskets of flowers and two cornucopias. The poem reads as follows:
“ON DEATH.
Give ear, O Man! thy end is drawing near,
But if prepar'd, there is no cause to fear!
Whate'er our state, 'tis the fate of all,
We must obey whenever Death doth call.
Both Old and Young, O Death! Must yield to thee,
And, day by day, thy powerful arm we see.
In vain the tear, in vain the heart-felt sigh,
All that are born to live, are born to die!”.
