Description:
A Samoan carved wood war club, dating to the 19th century. This is a large and heavy club with a leaf-shaped head with central ridge on each side, a raised and protruding carved “collar” on it's long shaft that flares at the terminal end with remnants of a lug underneath. This style of club is found in both Tonga and Samoa. The remains of the lug under the handle appear to extend end-to-end which I believe indicates a Samoan origin. This is a great and old club with an excellent dark colour and glossy patina. An almost identical example can be found in the British Museum, acquired in 1865, object number: Oc.192
Dimensions:
Length: 122cm. Width: 14.7cm at widest point.
Condition:
The edge of the head has a small slither/section missing/broken and there is a small crack next to this area. The lug underneath no longer remains – appears to have been broken off a long time ago. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
