Description:

A fine quality portrait of a gentleman, dating to circa 1800. Oil on canvas (oval) and presented in a period gilt frame with oval mount. This portrait is believed to depict Mr Cooper, member of the Canterbury Philosophical and Literary Institution, attributed to Stephen Hewson (1768-1812) or follower of. The painting closely correlates to a larger portrait of Mr Cooper by Stephen Hewson that is held by the Canterbury Museums and Galleries, accession number CANCM:11383 (see last photo).
This is a strong portrait that is finely painted and depicts the sitter wearing a double-breasted dark jacket, a white cravat and a hint of a yellow waistcoat. There is an indistinct inscription verso on the stretcher.

Picture size: 32cm x 25.4cm (oval).

Frame size: 42.8cm x 37cm.

Condition:

Craqueluer throughout, most prominent to the left side of the face and the cravat area. Some small touch-ins to the outermost edges. Age related wear as expected but overall in good ready to hang condition. Please examine photos carefully.
