Description:

A charming caricature portrait of a British Colonial Officer by George Roland Halkett, dating to circa 1880. Watercolour on paper, signed “G.R.H” lower right, and presented in a wooden frame with blue mount (glazed). This is likely a depiction of Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 8th Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. A similar caricature of Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Carlo Pellegrini was published in Vanity Fair in 1874.
George Roland Halkett studied art in Paris. He became a regular contributor to various newspapers and art magazines, and from 1876 was the art critic of the Edinburgh Evening News. Halkett joined the Pall Mall Gazette in 1892 as political cartoonist and writer on art. He contributed many drawings and caricatures to Punch; became the art editor of the Pall Mall magazine in 1897, and was the editor of that magazine from 1900 to 1905.
