Description:
A painting of a terrier, dating to the late 19th century and signed S. Raven lower left. Oil on papier-mache and presented in an associated but period gilt frame. This painting by Samuel Raven (1775-1847) depicts a portrait of a terrier ratting, with a rat held in his mouth while three further rats run nearby and a fourth lies deceased in the foreground. This is an excellent and highly detailed painting that would have been a lid of a snuff box, and has since been later framed and presented. It is signed lower left S. Raven and there is remnants of the typical red inscription verso, sadly illegible due to wear. Samuel Raven was a Birmingham painter particularly known for his finely painted papier-mache snuff boxes and sporting and animal subjects.
