Description:
A folk art portrait painting of a one-legged gentleman, dating to the mid 19th century. Oil on board and presented in a period veneered frame with gilt slip. This unusual painting depicts a smartly dressed gentleman with one leg and the other substituted with a peg. The gentleman is stood within an interior that has an opening that reveals a landscape and a boat within a lake/the sea. The inclusion of a boat suggests the portrait could be of a former captain or naval man. This is a wonderful and rare portrait of a currently unknown gentleman – perhaps further research could identify him. There is a G. Rowney & Co artists' suppliers label verso.
