Description:

A portrait painting of a lady, dating to the early 19th century or possibly slightly earlier. Oil on metal (tin?) and presented in a period gilt frame with an inner gilt oval slip/mount. This fine painting depicts a three-quarter length portrait of a lady wearing a red dress with a little pink flower, a veil over her hair adorned with pearls, as well as a pearl necklace and gold and pearl bracelets. She is holding a silver ewer and is set outside with a hint of green foliage.

Dimensions:

Picture size: 22.6cm x 17.9cm (oval aperture size). (tin measures 24.8cm x 20cm).

Frame size: 40cm x 35.7cm.

Condition:

Retouched large scratch that extends vertically from the left side of background through her dress/sleeve and across her right arm and into the lower part of the dress. Some small scattered areas of retouching. Some surface marks and blemishes. The frame has lost almost all of the decorative moulding on the lower section and a decent amount on the right side, and smaller sections elsewhere including a few small losses to the outer edge – these losses have been overpainted gold. The inner oval mount has a vertical crack in the middle section top and bottom and the gilding has been rubbed thin in areas. Despite all of these issues the painting displays well and has a good look. Please examine photos carefully.
