A portrait painting of a young gentleman by Adriaan de Lelie (1755-1820), signed and dated “A. de Lelie 1816” upper right. Oil on panel and presented in a substantial period gilt frame. This fine quality painting depicts a half-length portrait of a young gentleman wearing a navy coloured jacket, a yellow waistcoat, a white shirt and a white cravat. This is a strong portrait demonstrating excellent technique, with confident loose brushstrokes in areas and detailed where it matters. Adriaan de Lelie was a a Dutch painter and a pupil of A. Peeters, a painter of tapestries and ornaments, and afterwards of Andreas Bernardus de Quertenmont in Antwerp. He painted a great number of portraits and cabinet pictures, many of which can be found in distinguished collections.

Condition:
Paint appears thin in the shadow area of the right side of the nose – possibly from over cleaning but may have been painted thin. Some small scattered areas of touch-ins in the background. Some minimal fine craqueler in areas. The frame has signs of wear including loss/rubbing of gilding and some nibbles around the edges. Age related wear as expected. Overall in good ready to hang condition. Please examine photos carefully.
