Description:

A portrait painting of a gentleman, dating to the second half of the 18th century. Oil on canvas laid to board and presented in a period gilt frame with applied scallop corners. This fine quality painting depicts a gentleman with billowing red sleeves, a black waistcoat, a white cravat and wearing a black hat with a blue ribbon. This is an enigmatic portrait, not just in the mood and atmosphere present but also where and how it originates – there is a strong similarity to Sir Joshua Reynolds self portrait circa 1780, with the composition and pose mirrored. It also has a strong feeling of being an earlier Dutch style painting, however that was also partially the inspiration behind Reynolds' self portrait and as a homage to Rembrandt. Given the similarity I believe this painting likely post dates Reynolds' self portrait. This is a very fine work with a touch of mystery that makes it a lovely little painting.
