Description:
A portrait painting of a gentleman, dating to circa 1825. Oil on board and presented in a period gilt frame. This superb quality painting depicts a half-length portrait of a handsome gentleman wearing a black jacket, a brown waistcoat with red stripes, a white shirt & cravat and a black stock. This portrait is excellent in its technique; from the glowing red shadow of the nostril, the bold speck of red in the corner of the eye, the arched eyebrows of the sitter, and the waistcoat composed in a swooping fashion, leading one's eyes up to the face of the sitter. The way in which it's painted matches the nature of the sitter, full of confidence and attitude. This is a small and intimate painting by an accomplished hand and similar in style to that of Sir Thomas Lawrence.
R. Davy artist suppliers' label to panel verso – according to the National Portrait Gallery database this style of label was used by them circa 1822-24.
