A fine quality three-quarter length portrait of a gentleman overlooking a landscape, dating to circa 1840. Oil on canvas and presented in a later 20th century gilt frame. This is a wonderful portrait of a smartly dressed man with his black waistcoat, jacket and necktie, with a white shirt underneath. He is stood upon a balcony overlooking a landscape with a moody sky. The canvas has been relined and restored at some point – detailed condition report below.

Condition:
Old relining. Restored tear that runs horizontally through his hair and an inch or two either side. Tear continues vertically over his left side of face and down to about his waist. There is overpainting in these areas that is well matched in. The horizontal restored tear is slightly uneven surface and can be seen in a raked light. The paint appears slightly thin in some places such as the right side of the cloudy sky. Despite these issues the painting displays well and is in otherwise good ready to hang condition. Please examine photos carefully.
