Description:

A Polynesian adze, dating to the early 19th century. This adze is slightly unusual and there have been multiple suggestions to its origin which seems to either be Fijian or Tahitian. It is a great and old example with a black basalt stone bound with sennit coir to the long wooden shaft with flared butt. The mid-section of the shaft is further bound in sennit coir and is likely an old repair and to strengthen a damaged shaft. This is an interesting piece and has an excellent dark colour and patina.

Dimensions:

Length: 52cm. Width of head: 17.7cm.

Condition:

Adze stone has some very minor nibbles on edge. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
