Description:

A great pair of George Baxter prints, dating to circa 1841, and presented in the original period gilt frames (glazed). The two images depict the arrival and sad departure of John Williams, a member of the London Missionary Society, famously killed and cannibalized by the Natives of Erromango, New Hebrides (Vanuatu). George Baxter was a personal friend of Williams and intended these works as a memorial. One of the prints has an attached inscription verso describing the images and stating that the frames are original.

These two Baxter prints are known as:
1. “The Reception of the Lamented Missionary, J. Williams, by the Natives of Tanna, the Day before He Was Massacred.” [London: George Baxter, 1841.].
2. “The Massacre of the Lamented Missionary the Rev. J. Williams and Mr Harris.” [London: George Baxter, 1841.]”.

Picture sizes: 21.5cm x 32.5cm.
