An excellent carved Maori Tewhatewha, dating to the early 19th century or possibly before. This ancient looking example is of elegant form with a tapering shaft and a large striking head. The shaft is unusual being plainly carved and does not have a carved motif midway that is typically found on most examples. There is a small hole in the head for the attachment of feathers. The piece has a wonderful dark patina and there are subtle tool marks visible on some areas of the surface.

Some splitting to the head and natural flaws of the wood. Age related wear as expected but overall in good condition. Please examine photos carefully.
