Maori Dance Paddle
Maori Dance Paddle
Description:
A small Maori carved paddle, dating to circa 1900. This finely carved paddle is intricately carved in high relief depicting a standing Tiki figure on one side, and carved with kowhaiwhai designs on the other. The end of the paddle is carved with the head of Manaia – the mythical creature who is a messenger between the earthly word and the domain of the spirits. This paddle is carved in the style of Anaha Te Rahui or Tene Waitere, and presumably an early made-for-market piece. The paddle has a wonderful colour and patina.
Dimensions:
Length: 51.6cm. Width at widest point: 7.1cm.
Condition:
The flat side of the paddle with kowhaiwhai designs has numerous small dents near the tip – looks as if it has been misused as a hammer. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
