Description:
A Japanese walking stick, dating to the late 19th century. This bamboo walking stick is decorated with the fantastic subject of “Memento Mori”. The stick is finely carved in low-relief and depicts a skeleton holding a fan in one hand and a large flower in the other. Beneath the skeleton a snake is coiled around the shaft of the stick and there are further flowers and leaves before the terminal end which is finished with a brass ferrule. The detail of the carving is superb and the walking stick has an excellent colour and patina.
