Description:
Two carved wood horse heads, dating to the second half of the 19th century. These wonderful carved horse heads are likely newel post finials with an armorial/stately connection with the raised bands of zig-zag lines and crosses carved on their necks. I believe these horse heads were originally unicorns and now lack the horns, as is evidenced by slightly rough patches on their heads where horns would've once been. Despite the lack of horns these now work great as just being horses and are beautifully carved and posed with their billowing manes. They both have a good rich colour and patina and are highly decorative.
Dimensions:
Each measures approx: Height: 28.7cm. Width: 24cm. Depth: 18.6cm.
Condition:
One has some very minimal and small white paint splatters/dots in areas. A couple of very small knocks/losses to the tips of manes. Lacking unicorn horns. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
