Description:

A finely carved wood and painted Guatemalan conquistador mask, dating to the first half or mid 20th century. This mask is possibly a depiction of Pedro de Alvarado and would've been used in ceremonial dances in Guatemala, specifically the the Dance of the Conquest, a dramatic dance that depicts the conquest of Guatemala by the Spanish in 1524. The mask is a well carved example and retains bright vivid colours with signs of age and use.
