Description:
A large carved & gilded wood monstrance, probably Italian and dating to the first half of the 18th century. This is a wonderful monstrance of Baroque design that features a wide horizontal aperture to hold a reliquary, and is surrounded by baroque scroll designs and topped with a finely carved winged cherub head. The knopped stem is supported by a tripod base and stood upon three finely carved lion paw feet (the back foot is carved without detail). This is an excellent quality piece that is a good large size and retains the original gilding with minimal loss (full condition report below).
Dimensions:
Height: 51.3cm. Width: 37.6cm. Depth: 17.1cm.
Condition:
Section of cherub's left wing has been reattached. Reverse of Cherub's head has a slot that possibly held a missing cross/crucfix? Small trace of glue where top section joins the stem – the piece is made in sections and has possibly been re-joined together. Missing toe on left lion paw foot and some loss of gilding on both feet. Some minor & very small areas and gilding loss and overpainted. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
