Description:

An excellent Italian Grand Tour gilt bronze statue of Mercury, dating to the second half of the 19th century. This finely cast sculpture is after Jean de Bologne (1529-1608) also known as Giambologna, created in 1580 and decorated the Villa Medici in Rome until 1780, then moved to the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and finally to the Bargello National Museum in 1865.
The statue depicts Mercury, the messenger of the Gods in Roman mythology, with winged feet and hat, and holding in his left hand the Caduceus - a staff entwined with serpents. Mercury is stood on a gust of wind blown from the mouth of Zephyrus, God of West Wind. The statue is fixed upon a black marble base.
