Description:

A highly unusual double sided portrait painting of two gentlemen, dating to circa 1790. Oil on a copper engraving plate with a portrait painted on each side, and presented in a period purpose-made maple veneered frame with gilt slip and a central hanging loop. Both paintings depict head and shoulder portraits of the sitters; one gentleman dressed in a red blazer with a white cravat, the other gentleman dressed in a blue blazer with a white cravat and a hint of a blue-striped waistcoat. The portraits have been painted on an old copper engraving plate, the engraving of which is slightly visible to one side (appears to show a compass and a grid with other markings). Both portraits are finely painted with great technique. A very quirky piece! Please see video attached.

Dimensions:

Picture size: 21cm x 17.5cm.

Frame size: 26.2cm x 22.5cm.

Condition:

Both portraits have small scattered touch-ins to the background. The gilt slip has a horizontal crack to the top on the red blazer side. Age related wear as expected but overall in good ready to hang condition. Please examine photos carefully.
