Description:
A carved wood and polychrome bust of Bacchus, dating to the 18th century. This finely carved bust depicts a head and shoulders portrait of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility and festivity. He is depicted wearing a grape vine wreath in his hair that has been carved with great detail. The bust has a bronzed polychrome finish and has been later presented on an associated serpentine base with metal and wood fixtures adapted to hold the bust. This is a highly decorative piece and despite the later base presents well.
Dimensions:
Height: including base: 48.7cm. Height of bust alone: 33cm. Width: 28.6cm. Depth: 19cm approx.
Condition:
Some historic losses to four of the leaves, one of which on the back is completely missing – these areas have been touched-in/overpainted. Small number of old woodworm holes to the face and elsewhere. There is a join between the head and body on the neck that is slightly visible which shows this has been carved from two pieces of timber. The serpentine base is associated/later and has multiple chips to the edges and corners. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
