Two Spanish carved wood & polychrome statues of Mary and Joseph, dating to the early 18th century or possibly before. These two finely carved statues are likely from a nativity scene with both posed on their knees. Both statues have glass eyes and are polychromed. Joseph is dressed in green with a gilt belt and a red and yellow robe with gilt edges. Mary is dressed in red with a gilt belt and a dark blue robe with gilt edges. Both statues appear to have some restoration with overpaint in areas of previous loss to the polychrome.
Both statues have fairly extensive overpaint in areas of previous loss to the polychrome. Both have some small losses/cracks in areas revealing wood. Loss of polychrome to the back of Joseph's robe revealing wood. Joseph is missing his left hand and missing fingers on the right hand. Mary is missing fingers on both hands. Age related wear as expected. Please examine photos carefully.
