A Spanish carved wood & polychrome statue of St John, dating to the early 18th century or possibly before. This is a very fine carved statue depicting St John, likely a figure from a deposition group, and is masterfully observed in a dynamic pose with hands grasping the billowing robes. The face shows a deeply pensive expression and has inset glass eyes. The piece has a polychrome finish with the robes painted in red and green with gilded details. The quality of carving is superb and has excellent attention to detail, from the anatomy of the hands, to the billowing robes and the especially fine detail of the feet in sandals.

Condition:
Loss/damage exposing wood to the tip of robe in right hand and some chips/loss to edge of robe in left hand. The right foot and base have been broken and reattached. Multiple areas of loss to polychrome on the robes showing wood and gesso underneath – largest area left shoulder. Very small area of overpaint/restoration to tip of nose and a few other small areas. Age related wear as expected. Please examine photos carefully.
