Description:

A high-relief carved wood & polychrome plaque of Saint Lucy, dating to the 17th century. This is a finely carved high-relief sculpture, possibly a tabernacle door, depicting Saint Lucy, the patron saint of the blind, holding her eyes on a dish in one hand and a palm branch in the other. Saint Lucy had her eyes gouged out before being martyred by being stabbed with a sword during the Diocletianic persecution in the early 4th century. This happened after being subject to torture and surviving an attempt of being burned alive. It is said that when her body was prepared for burial her eyes had been miraculously restored, and this is one of the reasons that Lucy is the patron saint of the blind.
This is an excellent carved plaque that has been later mounted and fixed to a red velvet display. The carving is in slightly fragmentary condition with damage and losses, however the figure is mostly intact with just a small chip to the dish but has lost a lot of the polychrome decoration.

Dimensions:

Carving measures: Height: 21.3cm. Width: 16.7cm. Depth: 4cm (approx).
Red velvet display measures: Height: 34.2cm. Width: 22.1cm. Depth: 7.6cm (including carving).
