Description:
A carved wood panel depicting Judith with the Head of Holofernes, dating to the 16th/17th century. Finely carved in relief, this panel is after a drawing by Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) that is part of the Uffizi collection. The scene depicts Judith placing the severed head of Holofernes into a bag held by her maid. Excellent quality carving and attention to detail – the shocked expression of the maid, the partially hidden knife in Judith's hand, the curls in her hair, and to the dramatic billowing robes. This is a great carving of a fascinating subject and the piece has a good rich colour and patina.
