Description:
A pair of carved giltwood statues of Roman soldiers, dating to the late 19th century. This interesting pair of statues depict two Roman soldiers in military uniform and about to draw swords (missing). Each statue is finely carved and gilded with a distressed finish that reveals the red bole colour beneath. I believe these were once mounted on an impressive piece of furniture as evidenced by peg holes on the reverse (since overpainted/gilded to match in) and have later been presented on wooden bases.
Dimensions:
Largest measures: Height: 26.4cm. Width: 11cm. Depth: 7.6cm.
Condition:
One statue has the tips of fingers missing on one hand and missing thumbs on both hands. The second statue has been professionally restored on one wrist. Swords are missing from both. Both have filled peg holes on the reverses that have been colour-matched in. Both stand slightly wonky and are leaning back on their later bases. Distressing to gilding. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
