Description:
A carved wood statue of a clock peddler, dating to the first half of the 20th century. This fine carving depicts a full figure of a gentleman with hat and umbrella, carrying a large number of clocks on his back. The detail in this carving is quite astonishing, from the sensitively observed facial expression, to the detail in each individual clock face. The figure has also been subtly stained in areas such as the shoes, clothes, hair, etc. This statue is likely from the ANRI workshop, founded in 1912 by Anton Riffeser. Anton Riffeser came from a family of wood carvers in the Tyrol region of Austria and established his workshop in St. Christina, which later became part of Italy.
