A carved wood statue of the Archangel Raphael, dating to the late 17th century. This finely carved statue is probably Italian and depicts the Archangel Raphael, his arms outstretched and his robes billowing with movement from the dynamic pose. The sculptor has captured great detail, especially the face, the locks of hair, the feathers of the wings, and the remaining fingers and toes. The statue has traces of gesso in areas suggesting it was once polychromed.
Joins visible on both arms and neck where pieces were carved separately and attached. Tips of fingers and thumb missing on right hand. Half of two fingers missing on left hand. Tips of toes missing on left foot. Some minor shrinkage cracks – largest on back of left leg (see photos). Back of base has a small piece missing. Traces of gesso in areas. Age related wear as expected. Overall good. Please examine photos carefully.
