Description:

A Norwegian carved wood peg tankard, dating to the second half of the 18th century. This excellent peg-tankard is of typical form and is finely carved, however it has an unusual feature of appearing to have a scumbled painted finish imitating burr wood, and looks highly convincing! This tankard has a carved lion thumb piece connected to the hinge of the handle and lid. The domed lid is carved in relief depicting a rampant lion with a crown, and the body of the tankard sits upon three recumbent lion feet. The tankard has a historic repair using a piece of copper riveted to the body to repair a vertical crack. The piece has an attractive, dark and glossy patina.

Dimensions:

Height: 21.3cm. Width including handle: 23.4cm. Depth: 15.8cm.

Condition:

Historic repair using a piece copper to fix a vertical crack on the body. Further restoration/filler to the historic split on the underside. Some splits on the underside. Restoration to the inside lid where the hinge is attached to the lid. Evidence of some restored worm holes to the body. Age related wear as expected. Overall in good presentable condition. Please examine photos carefully.
