Description:

A superb Norwegian carved burr birch peg tankard, dating to circa 1750. This fine tankard has a carved lion thumb piece connected to the hinge of the handle and lid. The domed lid is carved in relief with a rampant lion with crown. The handle decorated with incised lines and scalloped edges. The body of the tankard subtly decorated with incised lines and sitting upon three carved recumbent lion feet. All of the lion elements of the tankard are wonderfully stylised and beautifully carved. The whole piece has has developed an attractive dark glossy patina.

Dimensions:

Height: 22.2cm. Width including handle: 21.3cm. Depth/diameter: 15.8cm.

Condition:

A small chip/crack to the rim of the lid. A small stable crack on the body where the handle is attached. Some minor marks. Age related wear as expected. Overall in good condition. Please examine photos carefully.
