Description:

A fantastic “Aunt Sally” game with original box, dating to the late 19th century. An excellent example of its type and of a large size meant for outdoor use in a pub or fairground. The game was played by hurling wooden batons at Aunt Sally who was placed on a stand and had clay pipes slotted into holes in her nose and ears. Players stood about 8 yards from the head and the winner is the player who succeeds in breaking the pipe forming the nose: the other pipes do not count. There are other variations of these rules such as the winner is whoever breaks the most pipes in a given amount of throws. The Aunt Sally head is constructed of wood and is dressed in paisley design fabric. The head shows signs of over-painting, presumably to “freshen” her up after becoming a bit too bashed. She comes with two wooden batons and a ball and she is contained in the original box with paper label and iron handles and fixtures. There is no stand.

Dimensions:

Height of the head: 29.5cm (approx 23.7cm of which is visible).
Total height including fabric extended: up to 70.5cm.
Dimensions of the box: Length: 54.6cm. Depth: 20cm. Height: 20cm.

Condition:

The head has multiple old knocks and dents and has historic overpainting. The hinges of the box lid are broken but partly remain. The label on the box had some loss. Age related wear as expected but overall okay. Please examine photos carefully.
