Description:

A finely carved Asmat canoe prow, dating to the first half of the 20th century. Ornately carved with a tall elongated figure standing with a head between their feet. The figure is set upon scrolling “S” designs retaining traces of orange pigment. Further incised geometric patterns carved within the base of the prow.
Provenance: Christie's, Paris, Art Africain et Oceanien, 11 June 2007, lot 293.
By repute formerly the collection of Lt Gen AHLF Pitt Rivers.

Dimensions:

Height: 61.3cm. Width: 31cm. Depth: 18.8cm.

Condition:

Top middle section damaged/replaced (can be removed). Some damage to the nose. Some age splits/cracks to the face. Age related wear as expected but overall in good condition. Please examine photos carefully.
