This sampler is signed “Mary Bethell in her 11th year, 1816” and is decorated with a poem on the subject of death, floral motifs, baskets of flowers and two cornucopias. The poem reads as follows: \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“ON DEATH.\u003cbr\u003eGive ear, O Man! thy end is drawing near,\u003cbr\u003eBut if prepar'd, there is no cause to fear!\u003cbr\u003eWhate'er our state, 'tis the fate of all,\u003cbr\u003eWe must obey whenever Death doth call.\u003cbr\u003eBoth Old and Young, O Death! The sampler is on its original stretcher and has modern cardboard placed behind to offer support and protection. The frame has been overpainted in gold. Despite the condition issues the pieces does display well and is ready to hang.
